Lenovo linux reddit

The exact configuration is listed below in this post. I thought I'd ask here to see if anyone has the latest Ubuntu or Mint 19 Cinnamon running on the X1 Extreme, and if so, then did you have any problems with the installation?

Thank you in advance for any feedback. I did find this today that suggests another distro that does work out of the box with the Thinkpad X1 Extreme.

I've used Mint for a lot of years now I hate to leave it. But maybe this is the way to go. I don't want to brick a new expensive computer.

Thanks, this is very helpful. May I ask what graphics your computer has? Or you might have to do the inverse" part that you mention. I'm not sure what I need to do here. One last post, in case someone else has this computer and wants to know if Mint still bricks the Thinkpad X1 Extreme.

I must have read hundreds of posts on the Internet from people who bricked their laptops with Ubuntu or Mint. It really frightened me to the point I was going to chuck it in on Mint. I didn't want to ruin a new computer. Frankly there is a lot of conflicting crap on the Internet that is so confusing. But this morning I took a chance and gave it a try installing Mint Here is my laptop config:. I did not order this machine with the nVidia graphics card, but it arrived with one.

The 1 key to having success is to update the BIOS to the current 1.

This fixed the bricking problem. There was so much information often conflicting about everything else involved in getting Mint 19 to work on this particular laptop. I don't know if I did it "right" but this is what I did, and my computer works great so far.

I turned on discrete graphics for the nVidia graphics rather than the integrated graphics. I've heard this cuts down battery life, but honestly I can't tell much of a difference from my older Thinkpad that this is replacing.

With the 4k screen it's not going to be great on battery life anyway. I have no idea if it helped me or not. I also did not check the box to allow 3rd party software to be downloaded at this time After the Mint install, I rebooted.

The dual boot worked but the initial screen has really tiny print I'll need to fix this I guessbut I could read it well enough to boot into Mint. I rebooted and everything seems to work fine, except that tiny print is a bit annoying for the dual boot menu.So what I got learn? It started to boot and after a while it really displayed boot menu "Start Fedora workstation".

But I couldnt to choose anything, because keyboard was inactive and it didnt react on touches on display as well. Thats all what I could try:. Do you think that this solution would work? Please update me on your progress. I'm very interested in being able to dual boot Android and Linux on this device.

Hello everyone. I have the same issue with Yoga Book Windows 10 version. Guys, maybe somebody has any idea what's wrong? I would like to cooperate with you on the solution of mentioned problem. I still have not bought Lenovo yoga book, so I always have to go to shop a ask shop assistant. Please let us know if the screen will be still black.

If the screen is black watch the LED diode If LED is not blinking and screen is still black for 5 minutes at least Fedora 25 has the newest kernel 4. I tried to boot with Fedora 24 - result is the same as yours - black screen.

I'll try to do what you wrote, I guess, it has a sence. I'm going to update topic and show you results. I'm back. Next, I tested the USB-stick 2. Finally, I connect it to Lenova book and try to boot There are not different between is the secure mode 'on' or 'off'.

I get the same -- black screen with a tiny white text cursor on top left. The led on USB is blinking all the time, some about times per second, like it's being read, but nothing happends. The live image of these distributions doesn't work as well. I had the same problem and fixed it by disabling the integrated graphics. I have the same problem. This really pisses me off. I used to dual boot linux fine on my old thinkpad just fine.

It boots linux on a live install then freezes saying 'cpu throttling' I have the same bios settings as the op. What the hell? Are Microsoft and Lenovo working together now to stop other Os's being installed on the machine?

I had tried Ubuntu After few attemps, I successfully get Fedora29 installed. Hower, the screen was freezed when I tried to Login. I updated to the latest BIOS 1. I have Ubuntu You guys have the 4K Touch Screen as well? Cause i think it was ever an issue on the full hd version. View All. So, what's wrong? Is the hardware too new to install linux? But I can not adjust screen light, after install the navida driver. However, when the machine boots-up there's a weird sound coming from the speaker.

Not like a friendly BIOS beep, more like an angry angle grinder grinding through metal. It's hard to describe what it actually sounds like, but I don't have an audio recording unfortunately. I uninstalled Ubuntu and Linux Mint and it doesn't happen anymore.

Does anyone else have this? If so, is there any way I can fix it? Should I just wait for a later version of Ubuntu? I tried some basic stuff to try and fix it, like reinstalling it didn't work. I also suspected it had something to do with the Secure Boot and MOK-management and I tried a few different configurations but that didn't solve it.

Is it possible it has something to do with that, should I disable Secure Boot before installing Ubuntu?

I did have to enroll a few keys. With linux mint it only happened after enrolling them though with Ubuntu it happened right after installing itand the sound doesn't happen when MOK-management is set to launch at boot-up. So, when I have to install the keys the sound isn't there, but when MOK-management isn't set to boot-up at boottime you will hear it.

I really like Ubuntu, but that sound doesn't sound pretty nice and I'm sure it will be very distracting if that happens every time I boot it up in a classroom or something like that. I think I might be experiencing a similar issue.

Is that what you're seeing? I do not hear the beeps every time, but when I do hear them, their tone changes slighly. If I manually turn the machine off, when I turn it back on, I hear the sound. However that could just be coincidence for now, and I need to get some more data.

When plugging in headphones, the noise still comes out of the internal speaker briefly, but when it stops, the sound continues to come out of the headphones at a different frequency.

I have the same problem, but I think I found a solution. Just don't connect your Laptop to the power while booting. It's not the best solution but better than waking everyone up while booting your ThinkPad. Hi harryrose, sorry for not replying to you sooner. I didn't realize someone had posted a reply. Anyway, that's exactly the sound I mean.Linux is a free computer operating system authored by a community of open-source developers.

Unlike these mainstream operating systems, Linux is a crowd-sourced project that anyone can alter. Technically, Linux is a "kernel", or the fundamental component of the operating system. The system can alternatively be installed to run alongside Windows and share the drive. While other operating systems protect their code from outside interference, Linux welcomes collaboration. This spirit has earned Linux a reputation as a breeding ground for innovation.

Linux has developed features that were eventually adopted by major operating systems. Linux is based on the earlier Unix system, which used the principle of modular design. In this type of system, the OS provides simple tools, while shell scripting and command language combine to perform complex workflows. This diversity gives developers the freedom to write code in whatever language they feel most comfortable.

Linux follows the free and open source software development and distribution model and is available through Linux distributions called "distros".

No purchase is required to use, distribute or modify Linux. Currently, more than modified versions distros of Linux are available with new versions continuously being created. Some of the most popular distros include Debian and Redhat, each of which has their own spin-offs. Though originally developed as an operating system for specific Intel computers, Linux is now the most frequently ported, or uploaded, of all computer software platforms.

Linux usage has experienced slow growth over the last decade, but as a new generation of developers gets their hands on this system, expect more users to get on board. Since its inception, businesses have used Linux extensively on their servers.

Many commercial, nonprofit and governmental organizations called Linux adopters utilize a version of the Linux operating system, including the White House, the U. Department of Defense and Wikipedia. Additionally, Linux is used for some game consoles, such as PlayStation3. InValve Corporation publicly paired with Linux to run certain ports through Linux, allowing many popular titles to be played on the operating system.

Valve also announced that its upcoming gaming console, Steam Machine, will by default run SteamOS, an operating system based on the Linux kernel. Linux desktop users are typically those who value an open source operating system and appreciate the speed, security and user experience of this open-source software. Instead of waiting months for update packages, Linux users receive regular updates as new technology becomes available.

To top it all off, Linux is free and supports a culture of collaboration in the software world. While they all have the Linux kernel in common, various Linux distributions build their own operating systems on top of the basic open-source foundation. In the spirit of open-source development, some distributions are completely community driven and receive no financial support.

Debian, Slackware, Gentoo and Arch Linux are a few of the prominent community distributions. The distributions drive a community of users who support open-source software and communal innovation. Linux, an alternative to well-known Windows and OS X operating systems, relies on a community of developers to create software and improve the computing experience.I've followed every tutorial I could find on how to configure bios and what to keep in mind when installing linux.

After that successfully installed Ubuntu However after some use I run into two problems on both The touchpad is not working about half of the times that I boot the system. I am also not able to fix it when it's not working unless by rebooting and hoping it starts. Deep sleep has not been working stable for me. Whenever I close the lid experience on of these three situations:. I really hope someone can help me with this as I'm very excited about the new X1 Carbon. It would be a bummer if i'd had to go back to Windows, since this is not workable.

I have not had the sleep instability you're describing. You could try the advice in this reddit post:. After that the touchpad works perfectly. However, I've still experienced some issues with sleep. I'll try to figure out what's wrong and get back on that in this thread.

Nice find! So after a few more days I have no problems anymore with the trackpad or deep sleep. The firmware update as mentioned above fixed the trackpad issues.

I've also found out what was causing the sleep problems: bluetooth.

I gave it a try and it is indeed caused by bluetooth. This issue was driving me crazy on my X1Y4 with Mint. I don't have a X1 Yoga available right now to try it out but it looks like the same version as the one mentioned in the windows update in the thread so it should work.

Hopefully it helps. PS - let me know how it goes. I've started pushing to make this happen as much as I can and Synaptics are the first vendor I've had success with hopefully more to follow. Without having used Linux on the machine yet, I will say that I doubt it is a great experience. There aren't really any touch friendly Linux distributions yet and if past experience tells me anything then I think you can bank on touch-screen drivers being a pain the ass to get working in linux. I too would love Linux on my Yoga but until someone tells me that it's great I will pass.

I am about to try the install tonight. I kinda disagree with the theory that tablet support for linux is not that good. My last tabled was an x61 I was pretty happy with the touch screen support.

You are also going to need a few things not on the live cd mostly just for gcc and building the driver. Now make a copy of the wireless folder because to get touch we have to do a kernel update and you will have to rebuild.

Touch Screen is functional in classic mode, but when screen is used 'upside' down, there is no auto detection, so you typically need ot go into setting anytime you arent using the classic laptop orientation.

The keypboard does not turn off automatically in these modes, though I use the protective sleeve I bought with the laptop that covers just the keyboard to disable it manually.

I solved this by using my phones tethering functinolaity and my accompanying unlimited tarrif. You can buy a cheap USb to Ethernet converter from Belkin.
