To deploy for enterprise environments in Firefox 60 or later, see Deploying Firefox in an enterprise environment. Mozilla publishes a new version with incremented main version number, new features, and bug fixes every six weeks and, as needed, additional security releases in between. On the day a major version is released, in most cases see below for an exception Mozilla stops providing bug fixes for the previous one.
For the planned dates for upcoming releases, see the column 'release date' in the Future branch dates table in the Mozilla wiki. Every seventh major version of Firefox is declared an Extended Support Release. These versions get serious bugs fixed in minor versions, for 54 weeks nine of the six-week release cycles. There is an overlap of 12 weeks two release cycles between two successive ESR releases, during which both ESR releases get bug fixes. The major ESR releases so far have been versions 10, 17, 24, 31, 38, 45 and This cadence will be broken according to information in Decemberand 60 will be the next ESR.
Many enterprises and other organizations with centrally-managed computing environments prefer to use the ESR rather than the RR versions, because then they need to test for compatibility only every 42 weeks instead of every 6 weeks. Also if there are any issues, they have 12 weeks additional time the overlap between two ESR releases to find a solution in addition to the 6 weeks that they can get by testing the beta version.
Note that there can be undesired side effects if you switch from a RR version to an earlier ESR version, for example from version RR back to The reason for this is that often new features are built into the RR versions for test purposes before they are finished, but disabled by preference settings. Eventually Mozilla decides to toggle the feature on in a certain version.
If you then downgrade to a previous version, all users keep their latest settings in their profile directories. Thus the option is now switched on, although the feature does not yet fully work in that version. This autoconfig. The first line of the autoconfig. It also helps to prevent re-inventing the wheel each time a new application needs to be deployed. Download the latest version of the toolkit and extract it. Stub installers are often difficult to script. Copy the contents of the Toolkit folder into a new working directory:. You should now have a directory with three folders and three files. In some cases, either the Files or the SupportFiles directories are missing; if so, feel free to create them.
Your work directory should look like this:.
Copy the downloaded Firefox file from your Downloads folder to the Files directory inside the toolkit:. Open Deploy-Application. At the very top of the Deploy-Application. Look at the Show-InstallationWelcome line in this section. There are a lot of things we can configure here, but left as the default, this line will produce a GUI pop-up that looks like this:.
On the other hand, it would be helpful if we could require users to close any existing version of Firefox before we attempt to upgrade the program, in order to prevent any problems with files in use. Fortunately, this is simple to do with the toolkit by replacing the -CloseApps parameter:. There are plenty of other things we can customize in this screen, but the default options will do the job nicely for now.
Fortunately, the toolkit offers a concept called deployment modes which solves this problem nicely. There are three different deployment modes in which the install can be run:. I find Silent not to be very useful, so I tend to either not supply a deployment mode or set it to NonInteractive. The Show-InstallationWelcome function immediately checks to see if the deployment mode is NonInteractive, and if so, it does not display a blocking message.
Wait a moment…how do we install Firefox without requiring the user or tech to click Next, Next, Next…Finish? A quick glance at that article leads to this segment:. Silent install always installs into the default location. When specifying a configuration ini file the installer will always run silently.
When specifying a Configuration ini file other command line switches should not be specified and may have unexpected results. Createor even just typing the filename. The toolkit is also thoroughly documented to make sure that these functions are visible. The Execute-Process function takes care of all of this for us. If you run the Deploy-Application. EXE as an administrator, Firefox will be installed on your system, with no required user interaction except the welcome window.
In the Deploy-Application. Personally, I prefer to change this to something a bit higher, like seconds 3 minutes. As it turns out, we can use the same file to uninstall Firefox as we can use to install it, and it supports a silent uninstallation as well. How to install Chrome Silently on Windows Using PowerShell Script
Now, we can uninstall Firefox using the same Deploy-Application. EXE using an argument on the command line:. The name of the log file generated is based on the application variables we declared at the very beginning. Open this file up and…whoa! By default, the toolkit writes its log files in a similar format to logs from SCCM. This is a SCCM log file viewer that can parse logs in that format much more easily.
After installing, launch CMTrace.
